After escaping the Jouk, the Artist (whose name is never mentioned) rides across the desert with Abagoo, who is severely injured and feverish. He plans to get him to the Four Kingdoms, a mighty army that has been assembled to defeat the Bouch' Tai'Hai.

Upon arrival, the Artist makes his living by drawing people's portraits. After meeting the Princess, she asks him to do her portrait, but they are rudely interrupted by Arvor Dark, the arrogant son of the Army's War Chief. Meanwhile, there are major developments aboard Major Grubert's spaceship, the Ciguri.
